March

March31

March came in like a lion…..and stayed! While we were anxiously waiting for spring to arrive, we have been very busy in the classroom.

In reading, we kicked off March with the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday with an all school read-a-thon. We finished our biography book museums. They are on display in the library, but will be going home soon for your enjoyment.  We also learned how to read for information. Each student chose a nocturnal animal to study, developed topics about the animal to research, took detailed notes, and organized those notes onto a graphic organizer. We also read many moon myths and practiced writing story summaries, as well as kept up with current events by reading Scholastic News.

In writing, we took the information that we learned about our nocturnal animals and wrote them into paragraphs. Each paragraph had a topic sentence with several supporting details. We then typed the paragraphs into reports and are in the process of adding pictures to our finished pieces. These reports will be shared on the blog soon.  We also started our Poetry Unit. Wow! What amazing poets we have in third grade! Stay tuned for some of those to be on the class blog too!

In math, we finished our unit on fractions and are working on multiplication and division again for the third time! We are learing how to multiply two and three digit numbers by one digit numbers. It is important to keep practicing those math facts!

For social studies, we began studying our state…Massachusetts. We reviewed map skills like reading a compass rose, keys and legends, scale, and symbols. Each student created a map of Massachusetts with key elements on it. We have also been learning about state facts like the state tree and state bird. Soon we will delve into the history of Massachusetts and study timelines.

We have been very busy in third grade during the month of March. We have worked hard in all our subject areas and we have also been practicing for our class play, “The Truth About the Moon.”

Check back soon for Nocturnal Animal reports, original poems, Massachusetts brochures, and a video of our play!

Happy Spring!
